roman pugio gaius 1The pugio was a Roman dagger, employed as a secondary weapon alongside the gladius in battle. It was also a practical tool. Politicians carried them as a symbol of their office, and it was with the pugio that Julius Caesar was assassinated. The pugiones featured a broad, leaf shaped blade with a central ridge. Later pugiones were narrower and had a smaller central ridge.
