Historically, there were a few different materials used for these shirts. One was a twill gabardine, usually dyed in bright colors but these got very hot. A craze was started in the early 1900s by a man with the last name of Brown creating a product he called Brown's Beach Cloth Jacket

The cableknit sweater has clear and defined roots in vintage clothing

The collar is large (as all good collars are) and looks just as good flipped up to block the wind and frame the face as it does put down (strongly suggested to keep it flipped up though)
